Kenosha City Council to take up proposal that could stop Wal-Mart

KENOSHA, Wis. The Kenosha City Council is expected to take action tomorrow on an ordinance that would create a new classification of "large-scale retail development" and could stop a proposed Wal-Mart.

The ordinance would create a new classification defined as single-tenant buildings larger than 100-thousand square feet and multi-building unified business centers with more than 200-thousand square feet of combined space.

Developments in that category would need to meet a number of requirements to be approved by the city, including having to abut at least one state or federal highway. City planners have said that provision is intended to manage traffic.

Dominick Tirabassi Junior owns the open land south of 80th Street and west of 30th Avenue at Kenosha where Wal-Mart is considering building a 203-thousand-square-foot super center. That site does not abut a highway. So the store could not be built there if the ordinance is approved.
