Residents can comment on proposed Wal-Mart

Area
residents will get another chance to weigh in on a proposed east-side
Wal-Mart Supercenter during Tuesday's Green Bay City Council meeting.
At
the June 6 meeting, the zoning amendment that would pave the way for
construction generated more than two hours of debate from aldermen and
residents on both sides — and that was before Tuesday's scheduled
public hearing.
The
first reading of the ordinance passed the council on a voice vote after
residents expressed opinions ranging from full support to outright
disdain.
Some
who oppose the plan are concerned about aesthetic or traffic impacts,
while others questioned the company's business practices in general and
the number of Wal-Marts already in the area.
Proponents have said the store is needed in that area and will create a strong tax base.
"I
do think having a Wal-Mart will attract other side businesses to the
area," said Alderman and City Council Vice President Chris Wery,
"whether it be eateries or Staples or Lowe's. … That's what we planned
for."
But
Alderman Celestine Jeffreys, who voted in the minority June 6, said the
area has enough Wal-Marts already. She's not opposed to a big-box
retailer in that location, she said. But she'd like to see some other
options.
"Do we need an anchor over there? I'd say yes," Jeffreys said. "But do we need another Wal-Mart? No."
