Building a Better Big-Box
As the blueprint from Monona, Wisconsin shows, big-box retailers like Wal-Mart can and should utilize much smaller sites by using underground parking and multi-level stores. The smaller footprints offer the same size store while decreasing the amount polluted runoff and recharging groundwater levels. More importantly, the smaller footprint can fit into previously developed areas within your community instead of paving over farmland. Demand the same treatment for your developments. Your community pays when Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers cut corners!
