Sustaining Communities Campaign

Through the Sustaining Communities Campaign, Midwest Environmental Advocates is providing legal, organizing, and educational assistance to help people maximize their role in shaping development in the places they call home. We have legal tools to help people fighting big-box developments, and Wal-Mart in particular, which is the largest, fastest growing big-box development to hit our communities. We are available to work with community members, demonstrate use of a land-use toolkit, increase government accountability, track big-box developments and provide legal representation to community groups.

The Sustaining Communities Campaign involves:

MEA has served as legal support in the following communities:

Alert! Is your community still accepting single-story big-box developments?  As the blueprint from Monona, Wisconsin shows, big-box retailers like Wal-Mart can and should utilize much smaller sites by using underground parking and multi-level stores.  The smaller footprints offer the same size store while decreasing the amount polluted runoff and recharging groundwater levels.  More importantly, the smaller footprint can fit into previously developed areas within your community instead of paving over farmland.  Demand the same treatment for your developments.  Your community pays when Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers cut corners!
