I-94 Expansion or Mass Transit, and Not Both?

By Jay Sorgi

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has accused the State Department of Transportation about not caring about mass transit needs in its I-94 expansion plans.

The Mayor wrote a letter to State DOT Secretary Frank Busalacchi about possible federal approval for a plan to add lanes to the stretch of I-94 from Milwaukee's south side to the Illinois border.

That plan includes both the freeway expansion and a simultaneous doubling of rail and bus service in the area.

Aldermen Robert Bauman, Willie Hines and Michael Murphy co-signed the letter.

The Journal Sentinel says that Barrett is accusing the DOT of only focusing on the new freeway lanes, and not the mass transit options.

Busalacchi wrote back to Barrett and the aldermen, stating that it's the city and Milwaukee County that need to work on mass transit improvements, not the state DOT.

Federal approval for the plan could come this week.
