UNDATED The Lac du Flambeau (lahk-doo-FLAM'-boh) Chippewa tribe wants to take charge of water quality on its reservation.
The
tribe is asking the Environmental Protection Agency for power to
regulate point sources of pollution. Tribal leaders say they need to
maintain high water quality standards for tourism and fishing on their
reservation northwest of Minocqua.Eight environmental groups support the tribe's application to the E-P-A.Some
outside the reservation are worried that if approved, it could affect
non-Indian property upstream in the heart of the North Woods
vacationland. The Mole Lake band is the only tribe in the state with authority to set water quality standards.
