Well contamination may lead to limits on manure
Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers
MORRISON
— The Morrison Town Board held an emergency meeting on Thursday to deal
with the worsening well contamination problem in and around the
community of Wayside.
The
Town Board voted to hold a special town meeting and special town board
meeting on Tuesday at the Morrison Town Hall, 3792 Park Road, to
consider enacting a ban on the spreading of any material on frozen
ground anywhere in the town until April 15.
The
special town meeting begins at 6 p.m. with a presentation by
representatives from the state Department of Natural Resources, the
Brown County Health Department and the Brown County Land Conservation
Department.
Several farms in the area spread liquid manure on fields.
At
least 17 wells in the Wayside area have been contaminated and tested
positive for the presence of e coli and coli form bacteria.
An
investigator has found three improperly abandoned wells, which were
never capped and could allow liquid manure go directly into the
underground aquifer. Most of the contaminated wells are shallow.
The
state's Manure Management Task Force recommended that winter spreading
should be prohibited on fields where there is a risk of water or
contamination.
