Board recommends banning manure spreads in some winter months

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. The state Natural Resources Board has approved new regulations aimed at the practice of spreading manure.

The regulations would prohibit farmers on the state's 165 largest farms from spreading manure on their fields in the months of February and March.

A Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman says the rules address concerns that the frozen ground can cause liquid manure to run off, where it can contaminate water wells and kill fish.

The regulations would also prohibit the spreading of liquid manure at any time when the ground is frozen or snow-covered.

The board's approval sends the proposed regulations to the state Legislature for final approval.
