Midwest Environmental Advocates Green Office Design Features
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Goal: Reduce Energy Consumption and Contribution to Global Warming
Daylighting
People thrive in naturally lit rather than artificially lit environments. "Cool Daylighting" is a low or no cost design technique that maximizes sunlight to illuminate spaces. It reduces or eliminates the need for electric lighting and reduces use of air conditioners.
We designed our office layout for maximum use of daylighting. Interior windows cut in deviding walls allow for the passage of daylight throughout the building. Skylights and solar tubing in interior spaces bring daylight even into enclosed rooms, eliminating the need for artificial light during most of the day.
Old leaky windows which allowed heat and air conditioning to escape were replaced with new windows with Low-E glass that reduces energy use by containing the heat of the building.
Energy Efficient Appliances
To accommodate MEA's growing office we chose to invest in appliances that would reduce our use of water and electricity. Using an energy efficient dishwasher and biodegradable soaps conserves more water then hand washing dishes individually. Our computer monitors, refrigerator and heating/cooling system are also energy efficient.
For more information about energy efficient appliances see the Energy Star program.
