APRIL 19, 2002

Last month we saw major manure spills around the state, as large livestock facilities dumped millions of gallons of liquid manure on frozen fields. On April 12, 2002, MEA filed a 60 day notice of our intent to sue Maple Ridge Dairy for these manure dumping practices. We are representing the Sierra Club in this effort to clean up the Big Eau Pleine River in Marathon County, Wisconsin. For more information, see the Maple Ridge Dairy case in our Advocacy Archive.

The photo (above) shows manure one foot deep after it ran off into a neighbor’s wooded property. From there it ran into a tributary to the Big Eau Pleine River. The photo (below) shows Andrew Hanson (MEA) and Caryl Terrell (Sierra Club) at the press conference announcing our intent to sue Maple Ridge Dairy.

We are also making headway in our efforts to obtain permanent protections for Skunk Hill, a site that is culturally and ecologically significant. On April 12, 2002, Skunk Hill was listed on Wisconsin’s Register of Historic Places and nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. Our efforts on behalf of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation continue as we work to get the entire site protected as a State Natural Area or placed under conservation easements. For more information, see the Skunk Hill case in our Advocacy Archive.

The photo (above) shows Rey Kitchkumme, a Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Council Member, thanking Bob Birmingham, State Archeologist, for his efforts in getting Skunk Hill recognized on the state and national register of historic places. The photo (below) shows Carol Brown, attorney for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Midwest Environmental Advocates’ Board Member with Nettie Kingsley, Ho Chunk Nation, at the nomination.
