January 2007

Wisconsin Capitol
BuildingAnnouncing Conservation Lobby Day 2008!

Conservation Lobby day is coming up on January 30, 2008!  The registration deadline is January 22, so register now to participate in this important event!  This is YOUR opportunity to sit down with your own legislators to discuss how best to manage Wisconsin's natural resources.

At the last two Conservation Lobby Days, we succeeded in winning two Conservation Priorities.  In 2006, the Clean Energy Bill was adopted.  In 2007, the Stewardship Fund was reauthorized.  The big question:  What will we win this year?

This year, the three Conservation Priorities that are still in play in the 2007-2008 Legislature are:

Keep the Great Lakes Waters in the Great Lakes by passing a Strong Great Lakes Compact for a Strong Wisconsin, which will prevent diversion of Great Lakes water to other thirsty states and countries.

Restore Conservation Integrity by passing the three components of the Hunter, Angler, Trapper Bill of Rights, which includes restoring the independence of the DNR Secretary.

Stop Global Warming by passing the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act which will adopt a science-based plan to reduce Wisconsin's share of global warming emissions.

Registrations MUST be received by January 22!   For more information about the event, registration, issue briefs, FAQ, and parking visit the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters or call (608) 661-0845.

Improving Wisconsin's Groundwater Law
In December 2007, after two years of work, the Groundwater Advisory Committee ("GAC") completed its final report.   GAC was created by Wisconsin's Act 310 is made up of municipal, industrial, agricultural, and environmental representatives (including MEA's Jodi Habush Sinykin).  The report includes an array of information and recommendations for improving Wisconsin's groundwater law.  Midwest Environmental Advocates hopes that Wisconsin legislators will heed the recommendations and protect Wisconsin's precious water resources.   Read more about the GAC and the 2007 Report here.

Protecting Milwaukee's Waters from Companies Dumping Chemicals

Fontarome Chemical, a pharmaceutical and fragrance manufacturer in Milwaukee, has been routinely dumping toxic and cancer-causing chemicals into the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage System.   On December 19, 2007, Midwest Environmental Advocates sent a Notice of Intent to sue under the Clean Water Act to Fontarome Chemical, on behalf of Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers.  Read more about Fontarome Chemical and their illegal dumping here.

Case Update!  Friends of Milwaukee's Rivers and Alliance for the Great Lakes v. Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District

In December, Midwest Environmental Advocates  received a disappointing decision from the U.S. District Court dismissing our lawsuit against the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, despite its illegal dumping of more than a billion gallons of untreated sewage into Milwaukee-area rivers and Lake Michigan.  MEA believes that the District Court failed to properly apply the Clean Water Act's prohibition on sanitary sewerage overflows.  Our clients have decided to appeal the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit and MEA filed a Notice of Appeal on January 11, 2008.   Read the District Court's decision and learn more about the case here.

DripSubmitting Comments on Environmental Justice and Global Warming Policy

Midwest Environmental Advocates recently submitted comments to the Governor's Global Warming Taskforce, addressing the need for global warming policy initiatives to consider impacts on low-income populations in Wisconsin. Because global warming mitigation policies often increase energy prices and transportation costs, low-income families face a disproportionate burden.  Environmental justice seeks to remove this inequality and protect those citizens who will be most affected.  Read more about the work of the Taskforce, the Low Income Workgroup and our comments here.

Expanding Opportunities for Law Students

We are now accepting applications for Midwest Environmental Advocates's Clinical program for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters.  Interested University of Wisconsin Law School students should apply through UW's public interest career fair.  Students from other law schools are encouraged to apply for our Summer Internship program.  See our website for more details on both the summer externship and clinical program.
