Group seeks Petri's input to improve water quality

For the Daily Tribune • February 26, 2010

PACRS (Petenwell and Castle Rock Stewards) is a citizens group dedicated to the goal of improving the water quality and fishery of Lake Petenwell and Castle Rock. With this common objective in mind, several members of the PACRS board of directors met recently with Congressman Tom Petri to discuss strategies that could be implemented which would result in cleaner water. The major concern is the blue-green algae blooms that occur throughout the summer season.

PACRS reviewed its goals and accomplishments to date and asked for the support of Petri. His input was appreciated, and he graciously offered comments and suggestions. Some key advice was for PACRS to link with other citizen groups along the Wisconsin River to work together to find a solution for the water quality issue. This coordinated effort already has begun, and PACRS has been engaged in talks with fellow organizations.

Key to the PACRS effectiveness is the involvement of technical advisers, of whom the organization heavily relies on for expertise. These are representatives from the Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin River Power Company, Land Water Conservation Departments of both Adams and Juneau counties, River Alliance, Midwest Environmental Advocates, and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, to name a few. They are an integral part of the organization. It is through the cooperative efforts of these experts and the members of PACRS that steps are being taken toward the implementation of water quality monitoring.

"A major key to the success of improving water quality is the strong partnership that exists with the citizens of the PACRS and the link with our technical advisers," said Rick Georgeson, president of PACRS. "The dynamics of working together will yield a positive result for future generations."

One example of the steps being taken is the postponing of the winter drawdown to Feb. 12 this year. This was done to improve vegetation growth in the upper flowage. Wisconsin River Power Company agreed to this suggestion made by the DNR with intentions of increasing vegetation growth for a dual purpose: to consume phosphorus and improve fish habitat.

In addition, there are plans in place to put buoys in the lakes to begin a water monitoring process. Attached to each buoy will be a thermister, an electronic thermometer used to get a vertical temperature profile. From these gauges, scientific data will be collected throughout the season to be used for analysis and subsequent recommendations for water quality improvement. PACRS was instrumental in getting both of these steps taken.

PACRS members and technical support individuals were very appreciative of the time given by Petri and thanked him for his support. Cleaner water in Wisconsin lakes and streams will benefit all, and PACRS is dedicated to achieving this long-term goal.
